Internationalizing Nelson Mandela University

A Journey through the unknown – 2000 to 2018

The internationalization journey of the Nelson Mandela University became a reality in July 2000 with the appointment of its first Director. As a very new activity for South African Universities, after the first Democratic elections of 1994, it started as a journey through the unknown and now 18 years later reached a level of maturity where the specific model of internationalization of Nelson Mandela University became one of the leading models of internationalization in South Africa. It is important that this story be told in a comprehensive manner, to serve as an example to others on how the university’s internationalisation was conceptualized as well as the unique elements adopted by the University to allow for its successful implementation and growth into one of the premier internationalization examples.

The Office for International Education and those that was part of the formation of the internationalization would be the main contributors to the book with the title: Into the Light - Internationalising Nelson Mandela University – A Journey through the unknown - 2000 to 2018. The book, edited by Dr Nico Jooste is a project of the Nelson Mandela University’s Unit for Higher Education Internationalisation in the Developing World.

The book will cover the university’s journey as reflected on by its founding director and staff of the Office for International Education.
